Empowering Education Through Innovation
Designed to Support Outdoor Classroom Education
In 2022, Purple Maiʻa Foundation reached out to designer and inventor, Ikaika Bishop, to build a model canoe that students could use to test various sail designs. In a few days he had carved his first model canoe out of drift wood, a dogfood bag, and some aluminum rods he had lying around. To his surprise, it sailed fairly well. Content with building from materials he found around his house and on the beach, he knew this would be difficult for most people to replicate.
Knowing that the model could not be easily recreated by most people, he advised the project to build the canoes from materials that could be sourced from any hardware store. He looked at lumber first, but saw the need to carve the wood as another hurdle. He looked at PVC pipe next, which he had tons of experience in using with plumbing and piping applications. With a few cuts, some glue, and a drill, he was able to build his first PVC Canoe. When asked if he felt there was a concern from building with plastic, as putting more plastic into our oceans was frowned upon, he decided it would be okay as long as the PVC canoe was sturdy enough to teach classrooms for many, many years.
Our Mission and Vision
The Educational Impact of PVC Canoes
Enhancing Learning Through Practical Application
Innovative Learning with PVC Canoe
Empowering Future Engineers
The PVC Canoe serves as a dynamic tool for fostering innovation in educational settings. By providing a hands-on platform for prototyping and engineering upgrades, students and researchers can explore the intricacies of design and functionality. This approach not only enhances their technical skills but also encourages creative problem-solving and critical thinking. The PVC Canoe’s adaptable design allows for easy modifications, enabling learners to experiment with various engineering concepts and witness the impact of their innovations in real-time.
